The Tough Decision
Some kids want to stay home all day, never go to school, and just be homeschooled. However there is one HBC student says that's not the choice for her. Hunter Harvey a senior at Hills-Beaver Creek had the privilege to try homeschooling for four years. She was homeschooled from third through sixth grade. Hunter says one thing that she really enjoyed about being homeschooled is the relationship she could develop with her family. Hunter’s twin sister Zoey was homeschooled along with her. Hunter says that having a sister there with her helped out so she would have another person to talk to and wouldn’t get so bored. Hunter says that she did miss things about public school such as interacting with other kids and making new friends. She says she enjoys being in a public school now better than she did getting homeschooled because she gets to be with friends everyday and experience different things. Hunter says if she had the choice she would have chosen to never have been homeschooled at all and would have stayed in a public school. She says that if she has kids of her own she would send them to a public school to give them different opportunities. |
The Lost Sport
Our community is brought together by sports. At our school we often think of football, volleyball, basketball, track, and golf. But what about the one we all forget about? Baseball. For the first time in two years this past summer we had a seventh and eighth grade baseball team coached by Keith Forshey. They had a successful season winning eighteen games and losing just five. They broke a losing streak of thirty-three games, got third in their division and brought a seventh and eighth grade baseball team back to Hills-Beaver Creek. They look to build on their season last year and have continued success.
Last season Keith said that the expectations were to have an even record of wins and losses. They definitely exceeded expectations and took the conference by storm. When asked about his expectations heading into this season he says to win the league championship. He says that they have a big group of kids returning from last year that look to build onto the success. The one team that they have an eye on and want to beat is the Baltic RiverBats. When asked why Keith said “last year they were the best. They won the league and the state title all together.”
Keith is entering his second season as the coach after playing baseball for twelve years himself. He plans on coaching for one more season. Keith enjoys coaching and getting to know his players. He says he makes memories every game but none more enjoyable than the last game of the season. They were playing the a very good team with just one loss in Hills. It would close out the year and hopefully build momentum for next season. They had bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning tied ball game. Calvin Erickson was up to bat with the chance to win the game for his team. He fouled of the first two pitches to make the count 0-2 he kept battling and eventually made the count three balls and two strikes. He kept fouling the pitches off not backing down then he drew the walk and helped his team get the winning run to get a win in their last game!
It was a great way to end the season and build momentum for next year. The team knows that even though they were successful last year doesn’t mean that they will be this year. They have to work hard and focus on getting better each day. If they want to get their goal next summer they will have to play together as a team and always give it their all!
